Oyo State Government has extended heartfelt condolences to the family of a secondary school student who was tragically k!lled on Tuesday during a routine traffic enforcement operation on Alakia Old Road in Ibadan, calling the incident “sad, shocking and painful.”
In an official statement, the government pledged to work closely with the Oyo State Police Command to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and ensure that justice is done.
Describing the incident as completely avoidable, the government said it occurred as a result of a traffic violation by the victim’s father, who was reportedly driving against the flow of traffic.
While urging residents to remain calm, authorities also reminded the public about the importance of obeying traffic laws.
The state government further clarified that contrary to some reports, the incident did not involve a police pursuit of a suspected internet fraudster. Rather, it happened during a scheduled operation by the Oyo State Road Traffic Maintenance Authority (OYRTMA), launched in response to community complaints about persistent one-way traffic violations that had caused several injuries and deaths.
Officials said the operation, which included OYRTMA officers and police personnel, aimed to improve road safety on Alakia Old Road—especially in light of recent attacks on OYRTMA staff and the fatality of one of its officials linked to a traffic offense.
According to the statement, the victim’s father was driving a tinted black Honda Accord with registration number FST 639 JU when he committed the traffic violation around 7:30 a.m. A police officer, now under investigation, allegedly fired a shot at the vehicle’s tyre but missed, leading to the tragic outcome.
