Nigeria Government Cuts Electricity To Niger Amid Coup

Image
Nigelec, Niger’s electricity company, says Nigeria’s government has cut supply to the neighbouring country, leading to blackouts in major cities. The electricity company disclosed this in an interview with the BBC after power shortages hit the warring country.  Recall that Niger soldiers announced a coup on national TV that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, Niger’s democratically-elected president. The military junta dissolved the constitution, suspended all institutions, and closed the nation’s borders. In response to the coup, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), after an extraordinary session chaired by Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, on Sunday, resolved to impose several sanctions on the military junta that toppled the democratic government in Niger. Part of the sanctions by the regional body was freezing all service transactions, including energy transactions and deals with all financial institutions.  The West African leaders gave Niger’s military junt...

FIFA To Pay World Cup Prize Money Directly To Players Because Of Nigeria

Image
Super Falcons World football body FIFA has announced its plan to pay prize money directly into the players’ accounts of the winners of the ongoing women’s World Cup in Australia/New Zealand. FIFA Secretary-General, Fatma Samoura, confirmed this in a viral video on social media saying the policy change is due to unpaid allowance issues involving Nigeria’s Super Falcons. The Falcons head coach, Randy Waldrum, had earlier revealed that some players were owed “per diem and bonuses” from two years ago. The development caused a stir and almost affected the preparation of the Super Falcon players with most of them insisting on missing the training to protest their unpaid bonuses. However, in the video, Samoura acknowledged that “things have been tough” for the Falcons. She added that FIFA for the first time would monitor that match bonuses got to the players directly. “I know that things have been tough. We have to face the realities of Nigeria. It pains me a lot. It is becaus...

Labour Shuns FG, Begins Protests As Oil Workers Down Tools

Image
The two-day meeting between the Federal Government and the organised labour ended in a deadlock on Tuesday, with the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress leaders vowing to begin a nationwide protest against the removal of fuel subsidy. This came as oil workers under the aegis of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association began an indefinite strike on Tuesday, citing inhumane treatment by the management of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, an agency of the Federal Government. The strike and planned protest by the organised labour slated for Wednesday (today) over the fuel subsidy removal by the Federal Government may shut down the country and paralyse the economy. Oil workers had earlier on Tuesday staged a protest and shut down the commission’s office in Lagos, while also vowing to shut down the agency’s offices nationwide. Speaking on the planned strike on Tuesday, the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, said the organised labour had no reason ...
