Analysis: Tinubu’s Poverty Plan Underestimated, Inadequate

Recent figures released by the National Social Safety-Net Coordinating Office (NASSCO) further raise doubts about the adequacy of the social welfare plan proposed by the Tinubu-led administration.

According to NASSCO’s report, there are 15.7 million economically insecure households registered in the National Social Registry, which translates to over 60 million individuals facing economic hardship and deprivation.

Recall that President Bola Tinubu had unveiled a social welfare plan funded through an $800 million World Bank loan, to mitigate the hardships caused by the removal of fuel subsidies, and had proposed a monthly handout of N8, 000 ($10) to 12 million poor households for six months.

However, critics argue that the proposed plan inadequately addresses the magnitude of poverty, as it fails to recognize the full scale of poverty in the country and leaves a significant portion of the vulnerable population without any relief.

As of November 2022, there were approximately 130 million Nigerians representing 63 per cent of the country’s population facing multidimensional poverty, according to the National Bureau of Statistics and this figure is believed to have increased since the removal of fuel subsidies.

In the face of spiralling inflation and skyrocketing fuel prices which has affected the prices of commodities, the amount proposed for each household is also being widely criticised as grossly insufficient to meet their basic needs, let alone have any meaningful impact on their lives.

However, President Tinubu expressed optimism about the potential impact of the welfare initiative, stating, “It is expected that the program will stimulate economic activities in the informal sector and improve nutrition, health, education, and human capital development of beneficiaries’ households.”

But in reality, the escalating prices of goods and dwindling sales have compounded the financial struggles of ordinary citizens, making the proposed N8, 000 monthly stipend appear woefully insufficient to address their pressing needs.

Some of the major factors identified to be contributing to food insecurity in Nigeria include poverty, climate change, conflict and insecurity, increasing population, poor policy implementation, inefficient agricultural practices, post-harvest losses and low budgetary allocation to agriculture, among others.

The Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, Lagos chapter Funmi Sessi, said: “Looking at the money and the effect of the subsidy removal that has escalated the prices of everything in the market, I wonder what the N8,000 can do for a family in a month.

“I wonder what it can buy and the services it can render for 30 days; N8,000 cannot take care of a family for a week; it is not possible; it is going to be like a drop of water in the ocean”.

A viral video on Saturday showed some women in northern Nigeria chanting “Komi Yayi Sadar,” as they protested the high cost of living.

President Tinubu has declared a state of emergency on food security and directed that all matters pertaining to food and water availability and affordability, as essential livelihood items, be included within the purview of the National Security Council.

“We shall create and support a National Commodity Board that will review and continuously assess food prices as well as maintain a strategic food reserve that will be used as a price stabilisation mechanism for critical grains and other food items. Through this board, government will moderate spikes and dips in food prices,” the Nigerian government announced.

The move is seen as part of an aggressive push to boost agricultural productivity and reduce the high prices of major staple foods in Nigeria.

The development is in line with the government’s short, medium and long-term strategies towards addressing the challenges of food affordability and accessibility in the country.

President Tinubu has also called for a review of the N8,000 monthly handouts in response to public criticism of the initiative.

Groups Laud Tinubu For Including Six Women In Ministerial Nominee List

Two Nigerian groups known as  Women Support Women (WOSUWO) and Heroine Women Foundation (HEWOF) have praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for including two women in the recently published ministerial nominee list.

Recall that in the nominee list sent to the senate, six women made the list.

The groups  described the inclusion as unprecedented and in line with Tinubu’s campaign promises to carry women along. The Executive Director of the organisations, Ambassador Onyinye Mamah, who gave the commendation in a statement yesterday, in Enugu, said women have not had it so good since the return of democracy in 1999.

Subsidy: Real Reason FG Meeting With Labour Unions Did Not Hold

Scheduled meeting between the Federal Government and the labour unions did not hold as expected on Friday.

The meeting was part of the process of arriving at sustainable decisions on the palliatives to be provided to Nigerians due to the removal of subsidy on petrol by the federal government.

After a meeting on Wednesday, Mr Festus Osifo, Trade union Congress (TUC) President, had said that the talks would continue on Friday.

However, an official of one of the unions at the Friday’s scheduled meeting, who pleaded anonymity, told State House Correspondents that the meeting could not hold because of lack of quorum.

‘’The meeting did not form a quorum. If there is no quorum, we are a people that operate on the basis of process. So, if there’s no quorum in a meeting what do you do? You will adjourn for lack of quorum,’’ he said.

Recall the federal government had pledged to continue to work out measures to ameliorate the effect of the fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians.

These measures include the introduction of the use of Compress Natural Gas, mass transportation and cleaner energy alternatives.

Ms Olu Verheijen, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Energy, disclosed this at the end of the Wednesday meeting with the unions in Abuja.

She said that the meeting made progress in agreeing to fast track a lot of the intervention that would stop the strike planned by the labour unions next week.

‘’But we are making progress, we’re trying to address the issues that will prevent a strike. We have to get it right. It’s important that we do this well, and we keep our promises.

‘’So it’s important that whatever is announced actually gets done. We don’t want to make big announcements and continue to lose people’s trust.

‘’It’s important that we build trust, and that most of the announcements and the plans that we roll out are credible and impactful,’’ said Verheijen.

She assured that Tinubu was taking measures to address issues concerning the palliatives, adding that he is very concerned about it.

‘’He is concerned about it, as you’ve seen all of us working round the clock here to make sure that we are able to announce these measures as quickly as possible. It’s a whole package of issues that we’re rolling out as quickly as possible.’’

The coup has prompted mounting concern and Kenyan President William Ruto called the army takeover “a serious setback” for Africa.

“The aspirations of the people of Niger for constitutional democracy were subverted by an unconstitutional change of government,” he said in a video message.

West African leaders will meet Sunday in the Nigerian capital Abuja to discuss the coup, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu said.

“ECOWAS and the international community would do everything to defend democracy and ensure democratic governance continues to take firm root in the region,” Tinubu, who is also the chairman of The Economic Community of West African States regional bloc said in a statement.

The European Union threatened to cut aid to Niamey after what it said was a “serious attack on stability and democracy”. Bazoum and his family have been confined since Wednesday morning to their residence at the presidential palace located within the 700-strong Presidential Guard’s military camp.

Tinubu Promises To Support Google's Job Creation Efforts In Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu has expressed the willingness of the Federal Government to support global tech giant, Google Incorporated, to create one million digital jobs in Nigeria.

The president gave the assurance at the State House on Friday during the visit of Google Global Vice President, Mr Richard Gingras, to his office.

Tinubu told the visiting Google executive that Nigeria had creative and talented young people who are ready and motivated to learn especially at this age of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

He stressed that the tech giant has the capabilities and tools that the young people need to excel.

“I am glad that Google is ready to partner with us. You have answered our call on digital innovation and to help our youths. You are supporting our efforts to promote digital economy.

Gingras said he had been inspired by the creativity and talent of young people in Nigeria who are embracing technology and digital tools to expand access to information and promote democracy.

He told the president that his organisation has deep interest in Nigeria and stands ready to support the federal government.

He listed the many capabilities of Google to include areas of Artificial Intelligence and other digital innovations that are empowering young people to become digital entrepreneurs.
